Project Description

Thinking Inside the Box.

A playful approach and encouraging client enabled Neu Architects to create something special over and above a typical period property refurbishment.

The single level 2 bedroom apartment was remodeled to take advantage of the high ceilings and utilise the core, darker spaces more efficiently. Two walnut 'box' volumes in the central part of the flat contain bathrooms, but also define other internal spaces of the apartment. They generate a series of hidden 3 dimensional interlocking volumes, creating compressions and rarefactions as you move between them.

A large, open plan living room has a hidden kitchen, slip to one side of this though a narrow gap and a mini voyage of discovery takes place. The concealed utility area reveals itself first, then squeezing up the narrow staircase till you land in an unexpected private study and further still, clamber up into the snug sleeping deck where you can close yourself off from the rest of the house.

Not only does this scheme provide the client with an extra 'room' but also clever storage space, essential in a small London apartment.
